The first Saturday of May 2015 will herald another historic race at the Kentucky Derby, which is considered as the toughest race in North America. Most people associated with the race whether they are jockeys, trainers and even owners unanimously stated that it is difficult to win the Kentucky Derby.
Trailblazers at Kentucky Derby
John Velazquez who has won a Kentucky Derby aboard Animal Kingdom got the win after a quirky twist of fate when his regular mount Uncle Mo dropped off at the last minute and the regular jockey of Animal Kingdom Robby Albarado was injured. Even though John competed 16 times on all his favourite mounts he could never win the Derby again. The actual trailblazers of this event are Victor Espinoza who won the Derby twice while Calvin Borel, Gary Stevens and Kent Desormeaux have each won it three times and are all going to try their luck again this year.
Tough competition expected at Kentucky Derby
Like every year, this year too there will be tough competition at the Kentucky Derby which witnesses top jockeys and powerful horses from across the nation. This year there are eight experienced jockeys that have never won the Kentucky Derby before but have participated several times. Most promising jockeys among them are Julien Leparoux, Javier Castellano, Joe Talamo and Luiz Saez while promising mounts are American Pharaoh, Far Right and Mustaajid. Kentucky Derby has a strange history of rookie jockeys winning the race at their first attempt which was proven when Steve Elliot won in 2004 while Mario Gutierrez won in 2012. Other first time rookie winners were Ronnie Franklin who won aboard Spectacular Bid in 1979 while Steve Cauthen won in 1978 aboard Affirmed.
